BOOK REVIEW: Drunk Words, Sober Thoughts

Drunk Words, Sober Thoughts by AudreyEve
One of the hardest challenges a writer will ever face is the task of creating characters that not only are realistic, but capture the reader's attention and immerse the reader into the story. Characters are an essential to every book; they are the only reason those words on a page become a story. But, anyone can create a basic Mary-Sue. What makes the story memorable is a unique heroine/hero that doesn't fit into stereotypes the reader is subjected to with most Wattpad books.

So, what made Drunk Words, Sober Thoughts and its characters so unforgettable?

The answer is simple: a fierce, POC, woman main character that defied norms and lives life according to her own rules. That alone is almost 10x as original from the standard blond hair-blue eyes valley girl that we've all grown accustomed to reading about. And, even better, the supporting characters weren't generic side-kicks, but a diverse group of teens with personalities! I feel like the uniqueness of the characters really made an impact on how enjoyable the story was, and DWST wouldn't be as captivating without the quirks and behaviors of the cast.

Awesome characters aside, Drunk Words, Sober Thoughts was a great read all on its own; from an adorable romance to an intriguing mystery, I was hooked! The plot was full of emotional twists and turns and was constantly moving forward. It starts off with Ari Quiroz, a spunky Filipino teen, who runs into a drunken Luke Hemmings while taking out the trash at her job. She spends her night taking care of him until he sobers up, and the next morning they part ways. But, much to Ari and Luke's dissatisfaction, the popular prep and the punk-rock girl are brought together once again when they start receiving texts from an unknown source. Drama and friendship comes shortly after, followed by tons of cute moments.
What really made the book stand out to me, though, was the fact that it was so original and different from any fanfiction I've ever read
What really made the book stand out to me, though, was the fact that it was so original and different from any fanfiction I've ever read. Yes, the characters were unique, but the storyline itself drew me in because culture played a major role in it. I loved how I could finally read about a character that had her heritage be important to plot development. Also, the reader is able to feel and relate to the conflicts and small dramas because of how descriptive and realistic the book is written. Drunk Words, Sober Thoughts felt like much more than a fanfic, because the author conveyed emotion extremely well, and it leaves the reader submerged in the book experiencing the life of a girl facing life head on.

From a cast of cute boy-band members to a sweet love story, how much better of a fanfic can you get? If you're ever in the mood for a large dose of 5SOS and a great read, go check out @AudreyEve's Drunk Words, Sober Thoughts. It'll make you "Waste The Night" while you're "Disconnected" from the world reading it, though you should "Try Hard" to not read all the chapters in one night ( it's addictive)!
